White alligators do not have pigments in their skin and are not protected against sun light. That's why this alligator is inside the zoo's butterfly house.

In the 1950s it was recognized that the alligator has been hunted almost to extinction in Louisiana while a rodent that was introduced to control water hyacinths was taking over wetlands without the alligator to prey on them. Alligator hatchlings were collected and reared in captivity to be released later. 1987, 18 white male alligators were found and picked up. There is no prior record of white alligators in history.

American alligators were almost extinct but were rescued. They are still on the list of endangered specied because they look almost like the more rare American crocodile. Today, alligators are farmed for their meat and leather.
