Inscription was put into place in 1871 during the restoration of the Holsten Gate. It was then thought that the gate was finished in 1477, but today it's known that it was not finished until 1478. 1871 was also the foundation of the German Empire. S.P.Q.L. stands for "Senatus populusque Lubecensis", so "Senate and People of Lübeck".
